At last, we have something real to talk about with The Great Beyond.
Warner Bros. used CinemaCon to unveil first footage from J.J. Abrams’ new original feature, and the early description sounds like exactly the kind of ambitious mystery that Abrams fans have been hoping to see from him again. After so much secrecy around the old Ghostwriter working title, this feels like the first time the movie has stepped into focus as an actual event picture.
Abrams said at CinemaCon that he wanted to get back to telling an original story instead of only playing inside existing franchises. He described The Great Beyond as a blend of thriller, mystery, love story, and sci-fi, all built around a sense of wonder. Honestly, that sounds pretty perfect for him. The best Abrams work has always had that urge to make the audience lean forward and ask what else might be out there.
The footage description only adds to that feeling. Reports say it opens with an H.G. Wells quote about another world “out of sight and sound,” then moves through retro computers and machinery before teasing Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega entering a strange alternate reality. Emma Mackey, Samuel L. Jackson, Sophie Okonedo, and Merritt Wever are part of the ensemble, and the footage reportedly ends on an ominous image of someone turning a key. Plot specifics are still under wraps, but the tone sounds big, eerie, curious, and surprisingly emotional.
That may be the most encouraging part. Abrams also said the film is about protecting that sense of wonder and possibility that people can lose over time. That is a strong emotional lane for him, and it makes The Great Beyond sound like more than just a puzzle box.
The film is currently set for release on November 13, 2026. There is still no public trailer or public poster online yet, so Warner Bros. is keeping a lot of this one close to the vest for now. But after a long stretch of mystery, this first wave of reporting is enough to make the movie feel very real, and very promising.
