Fan Friday: Which J.J. Abrams pilot hooked you fastest?

Time for a Friday question.

J.J. Abrams has built a lot of television around the art of the hook, and some of his pilots hit like a starting gun. Maybe yours was Alias. Maybe it was Lost. Maybe Fringe got you with the weirdness, or Felicity got there by being smaller and more human.

So here is this week’s question: Which J.J. Abrams pilot hooked you fastest?

I am not asking which show had the best overall run, although you can absolutely say that too if you want. I mean the first hour. The one that made you say, “Okay, I’m in.” The one that made you immediately want episode two.

If you want to go deeper, tell us what did it. A character? A reveal? The vibe? The score? The sense that the show had a bigger world waiting just offscreen?

Those first impressions are fun to revisit because Abrams television usually knows exactly what kind of invitation it is making. Some of those pilots promise intimacy. Some promise danger. Some promise mystery with a capital M. The best ones usually sneak in all three.

Drop your pick in the comments and make your case.

  1. Lost is still the fastest hook for me. That pilot has scale, yes, but what really gets it over the line is how quickly it turns panic into character definition. You are not just impressed by it. You are already attached.

  2. Alias might be my answer on pure velocity. It knows exactly how to introduce Sydney as someone split between worlds, and it makes that tension feel exciting instead of abstract almost immediately.

  3. Does Felicity have a stronger case here than people usually give it? It is quieter, obviously, but on pure emotional pull I think that pilot gets under your skin very fast.

    • I think it absolutely has a case. Felicity does not hit with spectacle, but it locks into yearning almost immediately, and that counts. A pilot does not have to be loud to hook you. Sometimes it just has to make you want to stay with a person.
