The trailers for Super 8 started in full mystery mode and slowly widened into something warmer and more character-driven. That rollout fit the movie: part creature feature, part kids-on-bikes adventure, part love letter to an earlier blockbuster feeling.

Teaser Trailer

Release window: May 2010 (attached to Iron Man 2)

The first teaser kept almost everything hidden. The crashed train, the ripped-open cargo, and the sound from inside the container did nearly all the work.

Release date: March 15, 2011

The full trailer finally let the emotional side of the movie breathe. Joe, Alice, the 1979 setting, and the Spielberg-adjacent small-town texture all moved into the foreground while the creature remained more suggestion than explanation.

Campaign notes

Super 8 benefited from the kind of marketing Abrams is especially good at: reveal just enough to make people lean forward, then broaden the appeal once the tone is locked in.
